Entering in only his second year as Monrovia softball’s head coach, Marcel Mayorga leads a fervid Wildcat squad in hopes of capturing their first Rio Hondo League title since 2014.

Even in such a short amount of time, Mayorga has done well to carry on the rich and proud traditions of Monrovia softball. This season, the Wildcats are off to a solid 4-3-1 start, including wins over La Salle, Shurr, Wilson and Alhambra.

On Monday, the team opened up league play with a home game against reigning champions La Cañada.

By the end of the third inning, it seemed La Cañada was on the verge of running away with the game, opening up a 3-1 lead. However, the Wildcats came roaring back in the fourth frame to take a 4-3 advantage.

Alas, a few miscues in final innings proved costly for the Wildcats, which allowed the Spartans to regain control and eventually take the game 8-4. Despite the loss, Mayorga said his team put together a valiant effort and showed they are more than capable to compete with the best of them.
